22 yr old daughter threw her gifts in the trash?
After a year of bailing our young adult daughter out on emergencies, including paying her car loan and her DUI fines, we opted for a modest Chriatmasa for her. Some cookbooks, a handmade scarf I traded for at a show, some perfume. No expensive gifts. She responded my throwing aeay our gifts, choosing to be offended. Nowbit appears that she wants us to pay her car loan. I have been driving around her d car that has the loan on it because she could not afford the gas. She drives around a paid off car ahe got with my car trade in. her old car is breaking down. She told me that Dad is her financial support and I am her liability. I am cutting her off as far as any financial gifts in 2011. Is this the right move?
Yes you are right to do what you plan to do ....in fact I'm you know now that you should have done it a long time ago . However you may have the best of intentions with regard to cutting her financially, but be prepared for her emotional blackmail . She is a spoilt /disrespectful daughter and needs to learn ..she can't treat people like she treats you / husband . It's time she faced the big world and stood on her own 2 feet. Did anyone pay for all your wants ? did you do it all by yourself ? I'm sure you did , so why should you / husband do it for her ? I have one son and at the age of twenty I told him .. "no more " ....so he moved out and it was the best thing that ever happened to him ...he learnt the hard way ...he is now 33yrs old , runs his own business , is married and has 20month old twins ...he is also a wonderful father and a loving husband ....he is not perfect but he is a good man . This would never have happened if we had not put our foot down ...and his behaviour wasn't even as bad as your daughters is . It's our job as parents to prepare our children for the big world and if we don't do that ...then we have failed them and they will never thank us for that failure ....do the right thing , stand your ground , and do nothing else for her until she is a respectful person towards you and is acting like a mature woman . I don't envy the task you have ahead of you ..but I do know you can do it if you / husband work together on this issue, remember ....together you stand ..divided you fall .
