Why are girls generally apple shaped, while men are pears?

Ok, I've noticed this from observation. Girls usually gain their weight in their stomach, chest, arms and cheeks, while guys gain their weight in their hips, legs, or butt.

Why is this? Is it genetics? For example, I have a huge butt and legs but slim waist, while my girlfriend has a larger top half then bottom.
