America, Russia and Britain made up the major Allied Nations and each contributed in their own way to victory.
The Russians dominated the war on land, dealt the german army ost of the casualties it sustained, and bore the brunt of the largest German attack, sapping the Germans of many supplies and resources in the failed Operation Barbarossa (Germany's invasion of Russia). As Winston Churchill once said, the Russians 'tore the heart out of the german army'.
The British were the first nation to stand up to Germany (along with France), and brought germany into a major war rather sooner than hitler had hoped, somewhat sabotaging Germany's plans to build up its strength even further. The British ruled the seas with the most powerful navy in the world, and prevented the Germans achieveing Naval supremacy. They also dealt the Luftwaffe (German Air force) most of its casualties, and prevented Germany from acheieving air supremacy. Just as the Russians tore the heart of the of the German Army, it can be said tha Britain tore the heart out of its Navy and Air force.
America served as the Manufacturing Super power, and provided much of the weaponry used by the british and Russians in the war. They also were the biggest player in the war against Japan, and from 1943 onwards played a key role in the war in Europe (although they did not fight Germany alone as most war films seem to suggest. Russia's role in Europe vastly outweighed America's and in D-Day over half the troops were British or Canadian, not American).
China was another of the allied nations, and fought Japan throughout World War II (a fight which had started when japan invaded China in 1937). After the Soviet Union, China sustained the most casualties of the war (some 20 million dead). China were inferior to Japan and depended upon allied-supplied weaponry etc. They did however, deal quite a few casualties to Japan (although America's role in the war against Japan outweighed China's)
Austria played no part in World War II, since it had been annexed by germany in 1938 and had ceased to be ian independant country.
Germany was one of the three major Axis nations (the others being Italy and Japan). Germany started world war II in 1939 with their invasion of Poland causing Britain to declare war on germany. By 1940 Germany had conquered most of Europe, with only Britain opposing them and a few other countries allied or neutral to Germany. Germany dominated the war in Europe, invading the Soviet Union (which arguably brought about their downfall), and fightin the British in Northern Afrika. Italy proved to be useless at fighting so Germany was virtually on its own in the war in Europe. In 1945, germany was conquered by the Allies attacking from the West and Russia attacking from the East. Hitler committed suicide, along with most of the leading Nazi Government officials. Germany was left without a government, and surrendered on May 7 1945, bringing an end to the war in Europe.
