Pinhole camera and the spray paint for the inside?
I am making a pinhole camera out of a coffee can. I have to spray the inside of it black. Two questions: One: Since the inside is probably coated, will I have to use a primer? Two: When I spray the inside, can it be glossy black spray paint or does it have to be matte?
I don't know how to navigate this site very well, so I thank everyone for their suggestions ahead of time.
Hey there.
I just made a pinhole for my photography class...the pictures came out great!
Anyway, it should be matte spray paint. I'm sure it would work with glossy but if there is ANY light leaking in at all, the glossy will reflect it more than the matte will so I would definitely go with matte. It's a smarter choice.
I don't think you'll have to use a primer. I used an oatmeal can (it was cardboard) and didn't prime it and it worked perfectly. Just make sure ALL of the coffee "stuff" is out of the can before hand.
If you are using a non-metal can (cardboard, paper, etc.), light could leak in more than if you are using a tin can, so I'd also recommend taping the whole outside of the can, in addition to the bottom and the lid.
In general, I'd just say use matte paint, don't worry about the primer (you can if you want to, though...mine came out fine without it and so did my friend's who also used a coffee can), and make sure you tape up any potential light leaks. I was super impressed with the contrast in my photos - I expected them to be super middle-gray toned!
Anyway, I hope this helped!! Good luck and HAVE FUN!
