Ideas for decorating china hutch. . .?
I have a large china hutch that I haven't decided how to decorate yet. I don't have an exact picture, but it looks something sort of like this one:

The top middle section with glass doors have the actual dishes. The small four shelves (two each side) I'm thinking candles. But the long bottom top to the base is posing an issue. I have three (overly rambunctious) kittens so any decorative plates, candle holders, planters, glass bottles, etc would be at their mercy when I'm not home. Our house tends to have an old world feel to it so something that keeps along those lines would be awesome.
I'm stumped. Any ideas?
Stick E Tack is a great idea, but I'm concerned it would ruin the varnish since it's all wood.
Helpful hint:
Use a product called "Stick-E-Tack" to anchor breakables against kitten havoc. It's available at any hardware store, Walmart and Target will also have it. It works like a charm, and if the breakable happens to be large, just use more.
Ideas:
Family pictures in beautiful frames.
For more "old world" or "artistic" feel, have the pictures re-done in "sepia tones" or black and white. If you pick black and white, you can accent them with a splash of 1 or 2 colors. Example: A picture of a girl in a dress standing in a field of flowers, you might just color her dress and all the pink flowers.
Walmart has a machine that will do it, or you can use computer software like Photoshop.
Start haunting thrift stores, yard sales, discount stores like Ross and Marshalls. They have inexpensive, interesting things.
Antiques aren't as expensive as you might think. Many items are reasonable and interesting. You might find a pretty tea set, picture frames, anything really.
Instead of candles, I'd put in lights. The dome light ones that you touch to turn on. Small ones can be places under each shelf.
EDIT TO ADD:
I've never had any trouble with Stick E Tack damaging wood, but there's another product called "museum putty", use by museums on fragile items. It's harder to find, but I have seen it in hardware stores. Call around.
