I need some advice on film schools and university?
Basically I have just finished my second year of university but have failed the year by about 12 marks. I was ill with mumps for over a month and inevitably my work suffered. I think I am going to have to repeat the second year which I will not do. Can anyone recommend something I should do. Eg a very good film school or studying courses. I live in Hull (United kingdom). Ultimatly I want to write and direct for televison and eventually. I am very competant at writing, art, photography and cinemotography.
I am going to suggest you reconsider that second year again. It is not in the failing that is the problem, it is in not completing what we started that we lose. It is in picking one's self up from a lousy circumstance and charging back in full steam that we learn the most and become the best. If you go elsewhere, you may have to start over.
You already know what is expected and can surely achieve much better in this next year than you would have in the past year without your illness.
I went back to college at the age of 46 and it took me 10 years to complete a BA and MA (US degrees, normally 8 years), because I had bouts of illness that threatened to knock me out of the bid for these degrees. I just kept plowing along and repeated the classes that I needed to and got through. Put any pride you may have at showing up after your problem and just do it. Your talent is what will win out in the end.
You will find that on graduation day, you will care less about that temporary roadblock that only slowed you down, but never stopped you.
By the way, my MA is in Media Arts and Computer Science, a multidisciplinary degree, with a concentration in Digital Video and Audio. I know what you are going through..
