You knew it was coming! Anyway, in no order:
1. Thelonious Monk- he was so much more than just a pianist. Totally original.
2. Art Tatum- technically the best. Light years ahead of everyone in ability. In a headcutting contest would dash the opposition to bits.
3. Bud Powell- May be the most influential jazz pianist in history. Everyone tried to sound like him.
4. Bill Evans- See above comment
5. Oscar Peterson
6. Herbie Hancock
7. Keith Jarratt
8. McCoy Tyner
9. Earl Hines
10. James P Johnson
honorable mentions: Bobby Timmons, Chick Corea, Ahmad Jamal, Dave Bruebeck, Fats Waller, Willie The Lion Smith.
Who makes your top 10?
What excellent taste you have! Since it wouldn't be any fun bringing up players you've already listed, I'll mention a half-dozen who aren't on your roster, but arguably should be (also in no particular order):
1. Wynton Kelly. I'm no mind reader, but based on the other Miles sidemen on your list, I *know* you're a Wynton fan, and it was simply a case of temporary amnesia that you didn't mention him, right?
2. Red Garland. The other Miles sideman well worth mentioning. Red's block chords were a trademark sound in that fabled Coletrane/Chambers/Philly Joe quintet.
3. Lennie Tristano. An amazing facility for complex harmony, and his chops approached the realm of Tatum.
4. George Shearing. For those big fat inside voicings of his.
5. Count Basie. Just as noteworthy for what he *didn't* play; a master of economy and style.
6. Tommy Flanagan. The ultimate team-player / sideman. Maybe he wasn't as much of an innovator or bandleader, but when John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Wes Montgomery ask you to play keys on 'Giant Steps,' 'Saxophone Colossus,' and 'The Incredible Jazz Guitar of," all jazz masterpieces... 'nuff said.
