How do make clay softer?
I'm making a pitcher/vase out of clay for a school project, but over the weekend I forgot to add water and it hardened a lot. The sides are mostly done, so I don't want to knead my whole vase all over again. Is there any way I can make it softer? I tried dunking it in water, but parts of it are crumbly. Thanks!!
spray the pitcher with water using a spray bottle filled with tap water then cover with plastic
wait 10 minute and spray with water and cover with plastic
wait 10 minutes check the clay trim or spray with water
this is part of the dance with moisture trying to get clay to the workable stage
too much moisture it can fall apart
too much moisture and legs won't support a figure
too much moisture and the piece will deform when moving.
too little moisture it is hard and brittle.
Edit: In time you will be playing the other side reducing moisture
Using a hair dryer or a propane torch
putting the piece in front of a fan or in the sunshine
Throwing on a dry plaster bat the bat will draw moisture out
To add moisture soak the plaster bat and put your piece on it wrapped on plastic leaving nothing between the wet plaster bat and your piece. This is slower than the spraying with water.
