Protecting and Repairing wood laminate furniture?
I have a coffee table I purchased from Pottery Barn (see link http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p5697/index.cfm?pkey=cfuroccctb&cm%5Fsrc=campaign ) that seems to scratch easily and the slightest contact to water seems to make it crack. FOr the most parts the cracks you can just feel but there is one small spot in the middle of the table that the laminate has come off. It is a very tiny spot millimeter wide and centimeter long but noticible since it is lighter. I was wondering if I find a similar wood stain if that would be ok to use to try to hide it? Secondly could I use a clear laquer or a semi-gloss polyurethane to go over this to protect this in the future or would this cause more damage? Thank you for any help or suggestions!
Holy cr@p! You paid more for that coffee table than I did for the last car I bought. For that kind of money I would be going back to the store and complaining. The store is probably already aware there is a problem with that piece of furniture--because you certainly couldn't be the only one that had issues with it.
But if you have to keep it yes, you can go over the scratches with some stain--that method hides the scratches beautifully. Just apply the stain to the area of the scratches, wait a few moments, then buff off with a soft, dry rag.
As for the polyurethane idea--NO!!! You need to find out what the current finish is on this table. If it is varnish, you cannot apply polyurethan over the top of it without ruining it. The polyurethane will cause the varnish to wrinkle and bubble. It is a mess.
