Series England
![]() |
What is the worst performance you have ever seen from your country in a Test series?
As a long suffering England supporter, I am spoilt for choice!
The one I will single out is the 1989 Ashes. England actually started the series as favourites, but they underestimated the opposition, and lost 4-0. Had the weather not intervened, it would have been 6-0. By the end of the series, England were in complete disarray: the captain, Gower, had been exposed as ineffective in the face of pressure, our best batsman, Gooch, was so bemused by Terry Alderman he resorted to playing for Essex Second XI to sort his game out, most of our senior players had defected (the announcement made in the middle of a Test) to a rebel tour of South Africa. England had been humiliated in every department, and were facing a winter tour to face a rampant West Indian side with a squad full of young, untried players. English cricket could sink no lower.
So that's the worst I have seen. What's yours?
Edit: The One- yes, the '89 Ashes pretty much are untoppable!
The 1984 Blackwash was worse than either the 1989 or 2006-07 Ashes. It was a massacre, and England were never in the hunt for a win. At least in the two Ashes series mentioned England had the odd moment where things went well - they could (should) have won at least one of the matches in both those series.
Even with Haynes only averaging 29.37, the Windies won the series 5-0... two big innings victories, the others by 8wkts, 9wkts and 172 runs!
Eldine Baptisite was 7th in the Windies BATTING averages at 34.79; of all the (record) 23 players to play for England that series, only Allan Lamb averaged more (42.88, with Botham next at 34.70).
The best 4 WI bowlers took 81 wickets at 19.70 (and the others took 13 at 32.46)...the best four England bowlers took 42 wickets at 23.52, the rest took 19 wickets at 69.37...
Allan Lamb got 100s in three consecutive tests, and Fowler added one too (although the most either made was 110)...this rather paled in comparison to Greenidge's two double hundreds and the five other centuries that the Windies put up during the tour.
