Staffordshire Flow

how do you stop a dog fight with a staffordshire bull terrier?
I had a real bad experience today with my staffy,he does'nt like the dog who lives on the end of our street,so when we walked passed the dog,he put his head out of the gate and my staffy latched on to his lip and locked his jaw and would'nt let go.So i was screaming and hitting him that did'nt work the dogs owner was strangling him to try and stop his air flow and he still would'nt stop.It was really upseting because he's such a nice dog he very good with my little boy and all people he's even scared of the cat in the garden and he never goes for any other dogs, but i think this one dog is a threat to him and he is trying to protect me.Can anyone give me good advice on how to stop a fight very quickly in case it happens again and there is no one to help me.
If you give his collar a twist you can choke him out of it.
Also, anyone owning a pit bull type dog should carry a breaking stick with them when walking. They are very simple to use and safe for your dog and the other dog.
You can find them on the Internet, but a thick, wide wooden spoon can do the trick. You will straddle your dog (if possible) and, standing over him squeeze your legs right in front of his back legs. Put the breaking stick (or wide part of the spoon) in his mouth behind his canines and give it a twist.
Edited to add... There is NO such thing as locking jaws. Pit bull type dogs have the same exact jaw structure as any other breed.
